Azureus – ordine Anura - L'anfibio si trova in Guyana, parte del Brasile, a Panama, Guyana Francese e Suriname. Questo piccolo anfibio pesa intorno ai 8 grammi e non supera i 6,5 cm di lunghezza. E' conosciuto con il nome okopipi , con il suo nome indiano Tirio o come Rana freccia Blu o Rana dardo, questi ultimi due nomi sono dovuti agli indigeni che utilizzano il suo veleno per ricoprire le punte dei dardi delle cerbottane con cui cacciano. La sua famiglia di appartenenza è quella delle Dendrobates, ordine Anura . Hanno una colorazione blu brillante con puntini neri che gli permette di avvertire gli eventuali predatori della sua tossicità. La pelle delle mini rane contiene molte ghiandole che, in caso di pericolo, secernono veleni in grado di uccidere gli eventuali predatori. Si nutrono di piccoli insetti, come acari, formiche, vermi, grilli, tarme e ragni. . Si ritiene che il veleno venga prodotto grazie ad un genere di formiche di cui le rane si nutrono, formiche che a loro volta si nutrono di numerose foglie che contengono alcaloidi velenosi. Il veleno prodotto dalla rana freccia blu contiene una tossina chiamata batracotossina che agisce rapidamente sul sistema nervoso e sul cuore (si provoca un'aritmia e infine un arresto cardiaco) . Il veleno, secondo recenti studi, può contenere circa 300 alcaloidi simili alla cocaina e morfina. Il nome Tincorius deriva dal fatto che alcune tribù indigene usano questo tipo di anfibio per cambiare il colore delle piume posteriori dei pappagalli . (strappano le piume e nella zona esposta strofinano la rana , quando le piume ricrescono la nuova colorazione andrà dal rosso al giallo anziché verde). - soggetto ripreso in amb.te controllato.
