Genere monospecifico che in Italia forma delle isole fitogeografiche che comprendono la Campania, Calabria (le stazioni più folte) e la Sicilia. Si tratta di una felce relittuale del terziario (± 70 milioni di anni fa) testimonianza di un clima sub-tropicale. A causa dell'affermarsi del clima mediterraneo si è ritirata in alcune aree montuose del meridione d'Italia ed è divenuta talmente rara da essere protetta con Direttiva Habitat 43/92 CE. In territorio italiano è inclusa nelle Liste Rosse Regionali di Campania, Calabria e Sicilia, come specie fortemente minacciata.
