Un abbraccio che dura da quasi 350 anni e che con i suoi 240 metri di diametro è, con tutta probabilità, anche il più grande di sempre: quello di piazza San Pietro. Secondo la visione del suo ideatore Gian Lorenzo Bernini, l'intera area (completata nel 1667 dopo 11 anni) con i suoi lunghi colonnati che si estendono per quasi 320 metri di lunghezza avrebbe dovuto simboleggiare proprio l'abbraccio materno della Chiesa all'intera umanità. Un ideale epicentro della cristianità, ricco di storia, arte e fascino. Piccola curiosità che riguarda la palla che si staglia sul cupolone:Dentro quella palla un tempo si poteva entrare Sembra piccola piccola da lontano, ma tanto piccola non è. La palla che si trova in cima alla cupola di San Pietro, sotto la croce, può contenere fino a 20 persone. E' fatta di bronzo, interamente ricoperta d'oro. E un tempo si poteva visitare: ci si arrivava arrampicandosi su una scaletta dalla loggia del lanternino, poi, attraverso uno stretto passaggio, 80 cm appena, si poteva entrare all'interno della palla. Passaggio stretto, impedito ai visitatori più robusti. Quando si era dentro, le fessure nella rotondità del bronzo permettevano di ammirare il panorama, davvero un'esperienza mozzafiato! In questo punto, il più alto di Roma, salirono re e naturalmente papi. L'ultimo fu Pio IX nel 1847, di sera, alla vigilia della festa di San Pietro. Mentre, nel 1845, papa Gregorio XVI offrì qui un rinfresco allo zar Nicola I. (Dagli anni '50 la salita alla palla è interdetta ai visitatori, per motivi di sicurezza.)
