Una grandiosa villa sorgeva nel punto dove l'Acqua Vergine usciva dal condotto sotterraneo per attraversare su arcate il Campo Marzio: era la villa di Lucullo, che occupava l'area dove oggi si erge la Ss.Trinità dei Monti. La chiesa, che anticamente era detta "Trinità del Monte" (in riferimento al Pincio), fu iniziata nel 1502 per volere Luigi XII, re di Francia e proprietario del terreno, con l'intenzione di concederla ai religiosi di nazionalità francese dell'Ordine di S.Francesco da Paola. I lavori si protrassero per tutto il XVI secolo, con una sosta di ben 60 anni, dal 1527 al 1587, a causa dei gravi danni, soprattutto finanziari, causati dal Sacco di Roma. Dinanzi alla chiesa è collocato l'obelisco Sallustiano (nella foto 4), portato a Roma quasi certamente da Aureliano e da questi fatto collocare all'interno degli "Horti Sallustiani" (dai quali prende il nome). L'obelisco, alto 13,91 metri, di granito rosso, è egizio-romano perché fu inciso anticamente a Roma con iscrizioni mal ricopiate dal monolite di piazza del Popolo. La scalinata, terminata nel 1726, alterna tratti curvi, tratti diritti e terrazze, costituendo uno degli esempi più rappresentativi dell'ultima arte barocca, di cui sintetizza il gusto scenografico e spettacolare. La soluzione non piacque molto ai critici del tempo, ma fu amata molto dal popolo, che ne apprezzò proprio la sua funzionalità e comodità. La scalinata si articola in una successione di rampe di 12 gradini ognuna, ai quali vanno aggiunti i quattro gradini iniziali, per un totale di 136.
