A rappresentare le aspre terre di Scozia, ecco un fiore dall'aspetto rude e determinato: il cardo (the thistle)! Uno degli esempi più famosi riguardo all'utilizzo del fiore di cardo come simbolo nazionale si può ritrovare nel logo della federazione rugbistica scozzese (vedi immagine a lato)! Il cardo è una pianta perenne, molto spinosa, che produce fiori di colore violaceo simili a quelli del carciofo. Questo vegetale trova un ottimo ambiente in cui crescere lungo i pendii dei rilievi scozzesi, dai quali ha avuto origine la sua leggenda. Pare che un manipolo di guerrieri Vichinghi avesse intenzione di tendere un imboscata notturna ad un accampamento scozzese. Un malcapitato ed imprudente invasore calpestò a piedi nudi una pianta di cardo, lanciando un urlo di dolore a causa delle dolorosissime spine. Le grida destarono gli scozzesi, che si prepararono alla battaglia e sconfissero i Vichingi, decidendo di eleggere il cardo a loro simbolo !
