La colonia presente nel territorio di Bosa è l'unica autoctona in Italia. Il grifone infatti, essendo per natura necrofago obbligatorio, e non predatore, ricopre un vero e proprio ruolo di spazzino dei pascoli. Esso, esplorando vasti territori alla ricerca delle carogne di cui si nutre, contribuisce alla salute dell'ecosistema e riduce l'insorgere di pericolose infezioni e malattie trasmissibili anche all'uomo. Su Entulzu (così chiamato dai bosani) è considerato uno dei simboli della Sardegna agropastorale e appartiene alla specie degli avvoltoi. Fino ad alcuni decenni fa, i grifoni erano presenti in tutta l'isola, attualmente però gli esemplari rimasti, sono quasi esclusivamente situati nel territorio di Bosa in un ambiente incontaminato. Nidificano nelle alte pareti rocciose a strapiombo sul mare o nell'entroterra la cui vegetazione è la tipica macchia mediterranea. Sono tra i migliori specialisti del volo a vela, grazie all' enorme apertura alare (circa 3 metri) possono compiere una serie di volteggi ad ali immobili per guadagnare quota, e planate ad ali leggermente piegate, tenute immobili per ore che gli permettono spostamenti di oltre 200 chilometri al giorno con minimi consumi di energia.
