Very Large Array, Socorro in New Mexico | Questa foto è del 23 Maggio 2017 scattata durante la nostra ultima (ormai quarta) spedizione nella Tornado Alley; durante uno dei diversi day-off di questa sagione avevamo pensato di ritornare al VLA e poi passare la notte a Socorro, ma dato che un'anno fa avevamo visto i radiotelescopi al tramonto e con una Luna fortissima, ho avuto la pensata di pasarci di notte per usare le mie fotocamere per fare uno startrail, una sequenza di timelapse notturno e qualche scatto. Il programma del giorno prevedeva di partire da Roswell NM dopo aver visitato l'UFO Museum e visitare le Caverne di Carlsbad (altro luogo che merita di essere visto e fotografato, garantisco!), da li dirigerci poi al White Sands National Park vicino Alamogordo NM, e raggiungere poi il Very Large Array verso le 23:00. Partiti dalle caverne imposto White Sands sul navigatore, vedevo che la strada che suggeriva il TomTom era diversa da quella di Google ma ci siamo fidati: arrivati ad El Paso TX sono iniziati i primi sospetti, però abbiamo proseguito entrando in un enorme poligono militare con carri armati e tutto il resto, finchè un militare ci ferma e ci dice che non possiamo proseguire oltre: per farla breve, il posto dove ci ha portato il TomTom non era il White Sands National Park, ma il White Sands Missile Range un sito di test militari (ho scoperto solo dopo che era stato un sito del test nucleare Trinity) e quindi abbiamo dovuto scordarci della tappa intermedia al WSNP e proseguire per il VLA con un ritardo quindi di oltre tre ore, usando stradine sterrare da film horror. Arrivamo sotto uno dei tanti paraboloni all'1:45 del mattino, spenti i fari però non si vedeva nulla, neanche il volante dell'auto, niente intorno, buio pesto, la definizione esatta di "corpo nero", apro timidamente lo spertello, non è giorno ma è notoriamente posto dove Crotali e altri bestie simili banchettano quindi bisogna avere prudenza, non si vedeva nulla, ma alzando lo sguardo quello che ho visto era qualcosa che non avevo mai visto prima, stelle e stelle senza fine, la Via Lattea era incandescente quasi accecante. Me ne sono fregato dell'ora, dei crotali, del fatto che di notte potevamo destare sospetti, della temperatura di 4°C e di qualsiasi altra cosa, ho abbracciato la D4s, l'ho agganciata al treppiedi e... questa è una delle tante foto che quasi in ipotermia sono riuscito a scattare!
