Piazza degli Eroi è una delle più importanti piazze di Budapest ricca di elementi politici e storici. Si trova alla fine di Andrássy út, famoso viale ungherese, diventato Patrimonio dell'Unesco e dedicato al conte Gyula Andràssy che parteggiò per il movimento nazionale magiaro e condannato a morte dall'Austria nel 1851. Graziato poi nel 1857 tornò in patria e fu eletto alla dieta (1869). Collaborò con l'Imperatrice Elisabetta, assumendo la parte principale nelle trattative che condussero al Compromesso austroungarico che, nel 1867 incoronò Francesco Giuseppe re d'Ungheria. Secondo la leggenda comune, il conte Andrássy ebbe una storia d'amore di lunga durata con Elisabetta, imperatrice d'Austria e regina d'Ungheria, nota come Sissi, moglie dell'imperatore Francesco Giuseppe I d'Austria-Ungheria. Alcune voci malevole sostennero che il conte Andrassy fosse il vero padre, di Valeria, la sua ultimogenita. Non vi è alcuna prova di questo, e la diceria potrebbe essersi sviluppata grazie alla devozione di entrambi verso l'Ungheria, la sua cultura e costumi nazionali. Ma tornando ad illustrare il monumento di Piazza degli Eroi, diremo che la costruzione del memoriale iniziò quando fu celebrato il primo millennio dell'Ungheria (nel 1896), ma fu finito solo nel 1929 e la piazza all'epoca assunse questo nome. Quando il monumento fu costruito in origine, l'Ungheria era una parte dell'Impero austriaco e le ultime cinque statue sulla sinistra del colonnato erano riservate ai membri regnanti della dinastia Asburgo. Da sinistra a destra erano rappresentati: Ferdinando I d'Asburgo, Leopoldo I d'Asburgo , Carlo III, Maria Teresa d'Austria e Francesco Giuseppe I d'Austria . Il monumento fu danneggiato nel corso della Seconda guerra mondiale e quando fu ricostruito i membri della famiglia Asburgo furono rimpiazzati con le attuali figure. Il 16 giugno 1989 una folla di 250,000 persone si raccolse nella piazza per i nuovi funerali di Imre Nagy, che era stato giustiziato nel giugno 1958.
