Dichiarato Patrimonio Unesco il monastero dos Jeronimos è uno dei più grandi capolavori di arte manuelina, un'esasperazione dello stile gotico, miracolosamente sopravvissuto al terremoto del 1755. Grandioso, maestoso, luccicante nel suo biancore accecante, incredibilmente ricco di decorazioni, venne fatto costruire da re Manuel nel 1496 nel punto in cui i naviganti salpavano verso il mare. Questa opera colossale nacque per celebrare i viaggi di Vasco de Gama nelle Indie e la potenza del Portogallo in epoca coloniale e venne dedicata a San Gerolamo, il protettore dei marinai: infatti le sue ricchissime decorazioni hanno trasformato il convento in una sorta di nave pietrificata in cui sono rappresentate corde, alghe, coralli, catene, nodi marinari che manifestano l'ossessione per il mare e le navi.
