Parco dei Monti Bale, Sanetti Plateau (4100mt). Questo lupo endemico dell'Etiopia è il canide più raro del pianeta. In quest'area sono stimati 200/300 individui. Presente in minor numero in altre due ristrette aree dell'Etiopia. La sua dieta è prevalentemente costituita da roditori, per un buon 40% dal Giant Root-rat (Tachyoryctes macrocephalus), per il resto roditori più piccoli (soprattutto muridi) e lepri. Caccia in solitario appostandosi davanti alle tane dei roditori carotandoli con dei grossi balzi appena questi provano ad uscire dalla tana. L'intera popolazione (intesa come specie) non supera i 400/500 ind. , con un trend negativo negli ultimi 10 anni. Minacciata da una pastorizia sempre più invadente, da malattie trasmesse da cani domestici (cimurro), da un traffico pesante (autocarri e autobus) sempre più intenso, da una popolazione in crescita esponenziale che reclama il sacrosanto diritto a disporre di tutte le risorse disponibili! Una specie, purtroppo, condannata all'estinzione.
