Il Monumento nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, o Vittoriano o Altare della Patria a Roma, è opera dell'architetto Giuseppe Sacconi. Il nome "Vittoriano" deriva da Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia, primo Re d'Italia. Da quando, nel 1921, accolse le spoglie del Milite Ignoto, il monumento assunse una nuova valenza simbolica, e quello che era stato pensato inizialmente come monumento in onore di Vittorio Emanuele II, divenne il simbolo dell'Unità e della nuova Libertà d'Italia, conquistata con il Risorgimento. La prima pietra del monumento fu posta solennemente da Umberto I nel 1885. Per erigerlo fu necessario, fra il 1885 e il 1888, procedere a numerosi espropri e demolizioni nella zona adiacente il Campidoglio. Durante gli scavi, nel 1887, al posto del tufo compatto che tutti si aspettavano, si trovarono argille fluviali, banchi di sabbia, caverne, cunicoli e cave. La leggenda narra che in tre giorni Giuseppe Sacconi riuscì a redigere un progetto di rinforzamento della cava. A causa di questo imprevisto, il costo del progetto passò dai 9 milioni di lire dell'epoca ai 27-30 milioni finali. Così rinforzata la cava fu poi utilizzata durante la Seconda guerra mondiale come rifugio antiaereo. Durante gli scavi vennero alla luce un tratto delle mura serviane e, addirittura, i resti di un mastodonte. La statua equestre di Vittorio Emanuele II, fulcro dell'intero monumento, fu affidata ad Enrico Chiaradia (1851-1901) già nel 1889; fu poi completata da Emilio Gallori e inaugurata nel 1911. Le altre sculture e opere d'arte hanno impegnato i maggiori artisti allora attivi in Italia. Dopo la morte di Sacconi, nel 1905, i lavori proseguirono sotto la direzione di Gaetano Koch, Manfredo Manfredi e Pio Piacentini e Guido Cirilli. La costruzione del Vittoriano indusse ad ampliare e ridisegnare la forma della sottostante Piazza Venezia, che ebbe la sua forma attuale, basata sulle idee del Sacconi, nel 1906. Il Monumento fu inaugurato da Vittorio Emanuele III il 4 giugno 1911, in occasione dei cinquant'anni dell'Unità d'Italia, alla presenza della famiglia reale, del presidente del Consiglio Giovanni Giolitti e di seimila sindaci provenienti da tutta Italia. Nel 1921 il monumento fu scelto per ospitare la salma del Milite Ignoto. La solenne cerimonia si svolse alla presenza di Vittorio Emanuele III e della regina Margherita. Nel 1928 si aprì via del Teatro di Marcello; ciò comportò lo smantellamento della seicentesca chiesa di Santa Rita. I lavori di scavo portarono alla luce l'insula dell'Ara Coeli, risalente al II secolo d.C., ancora oggi visibile sul lato sinistro del monumento. La sistemazione dell'area intorno al monumento fu completata nel 1931-32 dall'architetto Raffaele De Vico, che progettò le due esedre alberate a gradoni di travertino.
