Il nome Rambla deriva dall'arabo “ramla” che significa “arenile”. Originariamente la Rambla era, infatti, un torrente costeggiato da muraglie e conventi, e solo nel XVIII secolo si cominciò a costruire case vicino al mercato della Boqueria e infine la strada diventò l'attuale area pedonale famosa in tutto il mondo. La Rambla, inizia vicino a piazza di Catalunya e termina ai piedi della statua di Cristoforo Colombo, ed è costituito da cinque viali alberati distinti, ognuno col suo nome e con la sua storia. Passeggiando lungo le Rambles si è fortemente attratti da tutto ciò che esse offrono: statue viventi, suonatori ambulanti, mimi, caricaturisti, venditori che rifilano di tutto, giocatori ferratissimi nello “stregare” il turista, cartomanti e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Sembra, in qualche modo, di vivere in un libro di favole in cui ad ogni ora c'è qualcosa che sorprende e attira l'attenzione di tutti i passanti. Attenzione, però, ai borseggiatori. che si nascondono nella folla. Le 6 Ramblas Partendo da Plaça de Catalunya, la prima che incontriamo è la Rambla de Canaletes, poi la Rambla dels Estudis, che, scendendo verso il mare è seguita dalla Rambla de les Flores, nota anche come Rambla di Sant Josep.
