Il lago di Varese ha beneficiato negli ultimi anni di un crescendo della sua importanza a livello internazionale per quanto concerne le attività turistiche e sportive, in particolare il canottaggio. Le nazionali sportive australiane hanno scelto le sponde del Lago di Varese a Gavirate per la loro struttura di appoggio dove acclimatarsi e allenarsi in vista delle più importanti competizioni sportive a livello europeo. Molte società a livello europeo si appoggiano al Lago di Varese per i propri allenamenti. Il canottaggio è praticato intesnsamente grazie alle caratteristiche peculiari del bacino lacustre immerso in una vegetazione rigogliosa e con acque calme e piatte, particolarmente adatte quindi per le attività remiere. Sulle sponde del lago si trovano due importanti e titolate società: la Canottieri Varese e la Canottieri Gavirate. Nel 2016 si è tenuta sul lago di Varese la prima prova della coppa del mondo di cantottaggio con la partecipazione di 40 squadre nazionali e circa 500 atleti.
