Sulla sponda orientale del Lago Maggiore, nel comune di Leggiuno, sorge su uno sperone roccioso a strapiombo sul lago l'eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso. Il complesso monastico è raggiungibile via lago tramite i frequenti battelli turistici oppure percorrendo una scenografica scalinata scavata nella roccia di ben 268 gradini. La torre campanaria alta 15 metri risale al trecento e ha base rettangolare. Nel XVI secolo le tre pre esistenti cappelle sono state unite alla chiesa di San Nicolao per formare l'attuale struttura dell'edificio sacro. Alla chiesa si ha accesso attraversando un porticato formato da quattro archi a tutto sesto affacciati sul lago, Stresa e le isole borromee. Dal 1914 il complesso è considerato monumento nazionale e dal 1996 è retto da frati Benedettini.
