Notre Dame, come tutte le chiese gotiche, non è luminosa, sembra avvolta da una sorta di penombra che avvolge tutto l'interno. Proseguendo verso l'organo,( il più grande d'Europa), la luce si fa più forte. Entra dal rosone della parte ovest, ricostruito, come gli altri da Viollet-le-Duc. I rosoni sono dei libri in vetro: e rappresentano le storie del Vecchio Testamento: santi, vergini, demoni e tutto quanto serviva ad educare alla religione il popolo ignorante che aveva bisogno di immagini, non sapendo leggere. La campana di Notre Dame de Paris non suona mai. Solo nelle occasioni veramente solenni si può ascoltare il suono che molti descrivono come puro e perfetto. Secondo la leggenda raccontata dai parigini, quando si decise di rifondere la campana per rifarla, le donne di Parigi gettarono nel metallo fuso i loro gioielli in argento ed oro; da qui verrebbe la purezza del suono. Notre Dame conserva alcune delle reliquie più importanti della cristianità; anche se la chiesa cattolica non l'ha mai riconosciuto ufficialmente, nella chiesa sono conservati la corona di spine che portò in testa Gesù, un chiodo e un pezzo della Croce santa. Il Tesoro è conservato nella sacrestia neo-gotica che si trova nel lato sud dell'edificio. Insieme alle reliquie di Cristo ci sono anche quelle di San Luigi, come alcune ossa e la tunica.
