Il territorio dei Nebrodi, insieme ad una fitta vegetazione d'alto fusto, ingloba pascoli montani, cime solitarie e spazi incontaminati di macchia mediterranea, ha un andamento caratterizzato dalla dolcezza dei rilievi dovuta alla presenza di rocce argillose e arenarie di formazione terziaria. Nella parte più elevata e centro orientale predominano le formazioni arenaceo/marnose o arenario/silicee, nelle quali l'arenaria si presenta in banchi omogenei, alternata da strati sottili di argille e marne; nella zona occidentale dei Nebrodi e nell'alta valle del Simeto sono molto diffuse le formazioni a composizione argillosa; infine troviamo le formazioni calcaree sviluppatesi in successione discontinua, del tutto simili al più famosi massicci alpini, che si elevano nelle zone di San Fratello, Roccella Valdemone, San Marco d'Alunzio, Frazzanò, Galati Mamertino, Alcara Li Fusi (le famose Rocche del Crasto). Le vette più importanti sono: Monte Soro (1847 m.), Serra del Re (1754 m.), Pizzu u Fau (1686 m.), Serra Pignataro (1661 m.), Monte Trearie (1600 m.), Monte Castelli (1566m) e Monte Sambuchetti (1558m.). Il clima è caratterizzato da inverni lunghi ed abbastanza rigidi ed estati miti e non afose. La piovosità oscilla dai 500 ai 1400 mm. La neve e la nebbia sono abbastanza frequenti e creano il giusto grado di umidità per il bosco.
