Chiamata anticamente Piatza de Citade, la centrale Piazza Eleonora d'Arborea, fu ristrutturata nella prima metà dell'Ottocento; negli anni 90 ha subito un parziale ulteriore rifacimento, ma la piazza conserva ancora il fascino antico. Al centro domina il monumento in marmo alla Giudicessa Eleonora, scolpito dal fiorentino Ulisse Cambi e inaugurato nel 1881. La piazza accoglie, inoltre, il palazzo comunale, ospitato nell'ex Convento degli Scolopi, vari edifici in stile neoclassico tra cui il palazzo dell'Ufficio Tecnico Comunale, che ospita l'Archivio storico che conserva un'ampia documentazione relativa alla città regia, l'elegante palazzo Corrias-Carta. progettato da Gaetano Cima e il settecentesco palazzo Mameli, con i suoi caratteristici balconi in ferro battuto.
