Arrivati alla piazza ci troviamo dinanzi il Palazzo Senatorio, alla sinistra il Palazzo Nuovo ed alla destra il Palazzo dei Conservatori, mentre al piazza sorge la statua equestre di Marco Aurelio, stupendo esempio di scultura imperiale. Originariamente la zampa del cavallo, che è levata in aria, poggiava sulla testa di una barbaro abbattuto e la statua era completamente dorata, come è stata riprodotta oggi dopo un lunghissimo restauro. A ciò è legata una profezia: quando tutto l'oro sarà riapparso, allora canterà la "civetta" (il ciuffo di peli tra le orecchie del cavallo) ed avrà inizio il Giudizio Universale. La statua si trovava, in origine, dove oggi c'è l'obelisco Lateranense, in piazza S.Giovanni in Laterano, perché lì sorgeva la villa di Domizia Lucilla, la madre di Marco Aurelio: la statua era posizionata su un basamento all'interno di un tempio dedicato a Vesta ed alle Vestali. Per secoli rimase lì, ritenuta da tutti una statua di Costantino il Grande, finché Sisto IV la fece restaurare nel XV secolo e Michelangelo, nel 1538, la volle, con felice intuito, al centro della piazza capitolina. Altrettanto importante è il basamento, proveniente dal Tempio dei Castori e modellato direttamente dal grande Michelangelo. Il Palazzo Senatorio, così chiamato perché qui espletava le sue funzioni il Senatore, una specie di sindaco nominato a vita tra i patrizi romani, è oggi la sede ufficiale del Comune di Roma. La facciata fu eretta dal 1582 al 1605, su progetto di Michelangelo ma realizzata da Giacomo Della Porta e Girolamo Rainaldi: fu in questa occasione che la facciata venne rivolta nella posizione attuale, perché un tempo guardava verso il Foro Romano. La facciata è ripartita da lesene corinzie lungo tutto il primo ed il secondo piano; il portale centrale, che immette nell'Aula Senatoria sovrastata dalla lapide in lode di Clemente VII, è raggiungibile tramite una scala a doppia rampa in travertino, con la fronte ornata da una nicchia centrale in cui è posta la dea una statua di Minerva in porfido e marmo del I secolo d.C., ai lati della quale sono situate le due statue del Tevere a destra e del Nilo a sinistra, ambedue provenienti dalle Terme di Costantino: la statua del Tevere rappresentava in realtà il Tigri, con tanto di tigre sottrattale e sostituita con la lupa capitolina e con altri attributi del dio Tiberino. Sotto la dea Roma è sistemata una fontana, costituita da due vasche sovrapposte, opera cinquecentesca di Matteo da Castello. Due avancorpi laterali movimentano la facciata, ornata da finestre a timpani curvi e triangolari alternate al primo piano, quadrate incorniciate al secondo e sovrastata da una balaustra con statue. Domina la piazza l'antica torre campanaria, restaurata da Martino Longhi il Vecchio intorno al 1580. La storica campana, detta dai romani "Patarina", fu presa in guerra dai Romani ai Viterbesi nel 1200 ed annunciava eventi storici o circostanze importanti, come l'elezione del pontefice, la sua incoronazione o morte, il passaggio del corteo papale o, come ricorda lo storico Pietrangeli, la morte del "Gran Turco", avvenuta il 2 giugno 1481. Quella attuale nulla ha a che vedere con la storica Patarina: essa è soltanto la seconda erede, dopo quella posta in loco sul finire del Cinquecento (poi fusa da Pier Francesco Censori, capo dei bombardieri di Castel S.Angelo) e risale all'inizio dell'Ottocento. A metà altezza vi è un orologio ed alla sommità una croce rivestita da lamine dorate.
