La piazza del Campidoglio sorge sull'Asylum, la depressione situata tra l'Arx ed il "Capitolium", le due sommità del Campidoglio. Qui sorge uno dei monumenti più importanti della città, il "Tabularium", anche se anticamente l'ingresso avveniva dalla parte del Foro Romano. Quest'area, come un po' tutto il Campidoglio, dopo aver 1 Leone egizioconosciuto gli splendori della Roma antica, fu progressivamente abbandonata alla fine del mondo antico, fino a ridursi nel Medioevo a pascolo di capre, motivo per il quale fu significativamente chiamato "Monte Caprino". Ma già dal XII secolo, quando il Tabularium fu scelto come sede del Comune, tutta l'area vide una lenta ripresa, anche se la definitiva rinascita avvenne nel XVI secolo, quando papa Paolo III Farnese, in occasione della visita a Roma dell'imperatore Carlo V, chiese a Michelangelo di preparare un progetto per sistemare la piazza: questi pensò di rinnovare le facciate del Palazzo Senatorio (corrispondente all'antico Tabularium) e del Palazzo dei Conservatori, di costruire un terzo edificio, il Palazzo Nuovo, così da formare una piazza di forma trapezoidale, abbellita da sculture classiche, e disegnò la pavimentazione. I lavori iniziarono nel 1546 ma andarono così a rilento che Michelangelo fece in tempo a sovrintendere soltanto alla doppia scalinata che porta all'ingresso del Palazzo Senatorio: la piazza fu completata nel XVII secolo, in modo fedele al progetto originario. La grande scalinata progettata da Michelangelo ma realizzata da Giacomo Della Porta che permette di accedere alla piazza, cosiddetta "Cordonata", presenta alla base una coppia di leoni egizi di granito nero con venature rosse rinvenute nell'Iseo Campense, mentre nella piazzetta adiacente era posto l'obelisco che fu poi donato a Ciriaco Mattei e che oggi è situato nella Villa Mattei. Salendo la scalinata incontriamo, nel giardino che la fiancheggia, il piccolo monumento in bronzo dedicato a Cola di Rienzo, opera di Gaetano Masini, posto su una base composta da frammenti scultorei ed epigrafici vari realizzata dall'architetto Francesco Azzurri: l'inaugurazione avvenne il 20 settembre 1887. Al termine della Cordonata vi sono poste le colossali statue dei Dioscuri, Castore e Polluce , rinvenute intorno alla metà del Cinquecento nella zona del Circo Flaminio, probabilmente in corrispondenza del Tempio dei Castori e qui collocate tra il 1585 ed il 1591.
