Il santuario di Oropa è un santuario mariano - dedicato alla Madonna Nera - situato una dozzina di chilometri a nord della città di Biella, a circa 1.159[1] metri di altitudine, in un anfiteatro naturale di montagne che circondano la sottostante città e fanno parte delle Prealpi biellesi. Il santuario comprende oltre, ad un Sacro monte (il Sacro Monte di Oropa), la chiesa originaria sorta sulla base di un antico sacello ed il santuario attuale vero e proprio dotato di diverse strutture destinate all'ospitalità di fedeli e turisti. Della prima metà del Trecento è la statua gotica della Madonna nera che si venera nel santuario. Alla Vergine sono attribuiti numerosi miracoli e grazie particolari. Inizialmente il simulacro della Vergine era ospitato in un sacello, il cui sito è ancora visibile nella parete nord della basilica antica, presso un masso erratico, che probabilmente era stato un luogo di culto precristiano. Durante la peste del Seicento, la città di Biella fa voto alla Madonna d'Oropa e rimane incontaminata. Tuttora, annualmente, la città compie ad Oropa una processione solenne in osservanza di questo voto. Verso la fine del XIX secolo inizia la progettazione e costruzione della monumentale chiesa nuova. La prima pietra del nuovo tempio, che con la sua alta cupola chiude scenograficamente il santuario, fu posata nel 1885. Per realizzarlo fu scelto il progetto, elaborato più di un secolo prima, dall'architetto Ignazio Galletti. Un colle a sud del santuario viene spianato per far posto al Prato delle Oche. In questo modo il santuario diventa visibile da Biella. La chiesa nuova viene consacrata nel 1960, ma non si riuscì a spostare la statua della Vergine dal vecchio al nuovo Santuario poiché inspiegabilmente divenuta troppo pesante.
