La cisterna , in un primo tempo conosciuta con il nome le “Carceri di Nerone” e solo successivamente con il nome di “Piscina Mirabilis” costituiva il serbatoio terminale di uno dei principali acquedotti Romani, l'acquedotto Augusteo, che portava l'acqua dalle sorgenti del fiume Serino, nei pressi del monte Terminio in Irpinia , a circa 100 chilometri di distanza, fino a Napoli ed ai Campi Flegrei. Si tratta di un acquedotto che serviva numerose città e Ville di Patrizie e con tutte le sue diramazioni raggiungeva circa 140 chilometri di lunghezza , probabilmente uno degli acquedotti più lunghi costruiti dai Romani , un piccolo tratto è ancora visibile a Napoli e da il nome alla zona “ Ponti Rossi “ che deriva dagli archi tipici degli acquedotti Romani e dal colore dei mattoni usati.
