Lo Storico Carnevale di Ivrea è una grande Festa Civica, durante la quale la comunità di Ivrea celebra la propria capacità di autodeterminazione, ricordando un episodio di affrancamento dalla tirannide che si fa risalire al medioevo: leggenda vuole che un barone che affamava la Città intorno all'anno 1200 venne scacciato grazie alla ribellione della figlia di un mugnaio (Violetta) che, promessa sposa (a Toniotto), non volle sottostare allo jus primae noctis imposto dal tiranno a tutte le spose. Salita al castello decapitò il Barone ed accese la rivolta popolare che si concluse con la distruzione dell'edificio, che non fu mai più ricostruito, e con la l'istituzione del libero Comune. La Battaglia delle arance rievoca questa ribellione: il popolo, rappresentato dalle nove squadre degli aranceri a piedi, combatte a colpi di arance contro le armate del Feudatario, rappresentate dai tiratori sui carri trainati da cavalli, che indossano protezioni e maschere che ricordano le antiche armature.
