Il Timkat è l'Epifania copta, la più importante festa ortodossa in Etiopia che commemora il battesimo di Gesù. Le radici di tanta devozione risalgono a tremila anni or sono e affondano nel culto dell'Arca. L'Arca dell'Alleanza, il mitico scrigno di legno e oro che avrebbe contenuto le Tavole della Legge, era conservata nel Tempio di Salomone in Gerusalemme. Da qui, trafugata dal figlio di Salomone e dalla regina di Axum Saba, sarebbe arrivata in Etiopia dopo un passaggio in Egitto. Durante il Timkat le riproduzioni delle Tavole con i dieci comandamenti (chiamate tabot) vengono portate in processione in tutto il paese coperte da drappi colorati e accompagnate da incessanti danze e cori dei fedeli. Corni e tamburi, canti e balli conducono le tavole alla fonte battesimale. Qui, il giorno successivo, il Timkat, i sacerdoti cospargono con l'acqua benedetta le tabot, le croci, gli oggetti sacri e i fedeli che si immergono nell'acqua a ricordare il battesimo di Gesù nel Giordano.
