“Buongiorno Siora Maschera”, si soleva dire a Venezia nel periodo del Carnevale lungo le calli, per i canali e nei listoni. Il motivo? Indossando le maschere, si aveva la possibilità di nascondere, almeno una volta all'anno, la propria identità, il sesso e la classe sociale di appartenenza. La maschera a Venezia è così importante perché permetteva l'illusione di rendere la città un posto unico al mondo, dove era possibile essere chi si voleva e sentirsi liberi. La maschera era così popolare che già al tempo del Doge Foscari gli artigiani che fabbricavano maschere erano chiamati mascheri.
