Eravamo nei pressi dell'Aus waterholes, la giornata era iniziata alla grande riuscendo a vedere all'alba un branco di Leoni in caccia verso un Orice solitario. Ormai l'orario della “caccia” era terminato e ad Etosha stava iniziando l'ora delle “pozze”, per questo motivo il circuito Olifanstbad-Aus era entrato nei nostri programmi. Non avremmo mai immaginato di poter incontrare nelle vicinanze della pista un gruppo di tre cuccioli di Leone, fermi ad aspettarci giocando su un tronco, mentre la madre cominciava a chiamarli per ritornare all'ombra di un acacia nel bush poco distante. Dei tre, il più ribelle e ritardatario (fortuna nostra) decise una volta di più di fare il disubbidente e fregarsene dei richiami materni; Aus (lo abbiamo chiamato così) si sentiva “importante” e ci concedette di fare qualche scatto…per poi decidere che il momento di raggiungere i suoi fratelli e sua madre era arrivato, prima però ci regalo anche una “finta" caccia a delle Zebre poco distanti, per dimostrare a tutti che il futuro Re della savana si chiamerà Aus. Probabilmente uno dei momenti più belli ed emozionanti dei miei tre viaggi nel continente africano.
