Lasciano la campagna dove c'è il pane e scelgono la città dove trovano una rupia. Pochi riescono a raggiungerla, pochi quelli che riescono a guadagnarsela, quella rupia, pochi quelli che sopravvivono. Hanno corpi magrissimi, ossa rivestite di tendini contratti e pelle. Le costole che sporgono dai loro fianchi assomigliano ai ferri che escono dal cemento di queste case che, tutt'attorno, cadono a pezzi. Sono costantemente sotto pressione da coloro che vogliono spazzarli via, toglierli dalle strade e far scomparire il loro unico mezzo di sostentamento. E di certo non per proteggere loro ed il loro onore, ma per liberare la città di Calcutta da quello che è divenuto il simbolo scomodo della metropoli. Un'immagine sporca che, probabilmente, infastidisce. Questa è la loro maledizione, la loro sofferenza. Non l'imponente Howrah Bridge, non lo splendente Victoria Memorial e nemmeno il Fort William o il Kali Temple. No, il monumento vivente di questa città è rappresentato da questi dignitosi ed infaticabili esseri; sono i loro sguardi, ormai marchiati a fuoco dentro di me. Loro, insieme ai migliaia di campanelli che risuonano tra le strade di questo incredibile festival dell'esistenza umana chiamata Calcutta.
