Per quando mi riguarda faccio una premessa: gli alberi non sempre sono vicini alla duna, anche se con il tele (nei miei casi 400 + 1,4x) sembrano essere a ridosso.
Inoltre ho sempre messo a fuoco le dune, in quanto interessato alle linee o giochi di ombre e luci che si godono all'alba. ( Tu mi capisci, in quanto dalle tue bellissime gallerie penso che hai fatto il giro alle dune al mio stesso orario ....)
Detto questo, i fattori che sicuramente non mi hanno aiutato sono:
1) non ho usato il cavalletto per poter diaframmare di più;
2) rifrazione atmosferica, anche se questa dovebbe aver penalizzato anche lo sfondo...
3) mia inesperienza tecnica
Se un giorno ci torno, farò tutte le prove possibili!

Ho però visto (in altri siti di ottimo livello), ottime foto di questi luoghi. Scatti effettuati con diaframmi chiusi e, probabilmente (anche se non specificato) con cavalletto. Eppure, anche in tali casi, spesso gli alberi ai piedi delle dune soffrono di nitidezza.
Io mi sono fatta due ipotesi: la prima, una differenza di temperatura che si viene a creare ai piedi delle dune e che rende meno nitida l'atmosfera; la seconda, la particolare conformazione degli alberi (spesso acacie spinose), ricchi di lunghi spini e, necessariamente, molto polverosi...
Per es. anche nel tuo caso, erba secca e alberello sono praticamente alla stessa distanza dall'obiettivo. Eppure l'erba "appare" più nitida.
Giusto per esprimere un'opinione...
