Torino - Parco del Valentino. Questa immagine da un' idea del perché lo scoiattolo Grigio Americano sta diventando una razza infestante in molte zone del Nord Italia e dell' Europa e sta provocando l' estinzione dello scoiattolo Rosso Europeo e alla drastica riduzione di molti piccoli passeracei e affini come cince , pettirossi , fringuelli etc… Il Grigio è quasi onnivoro , mangia anche gli avanzi dell' uomo e pur non mangiando carne, si nutre anche con le uova dei piccoli uccellini che non sono in grado di scacciarlo. Assorbendo proteine animali è molto più prolifico e si diffonde molto rapidamente inoltre è un portatore sano di un virus che uccide il Rosso. In soli 5 anni ha completamente invaso alcuni parchi di Torino e le rive del PO e ha portato all' estinzione del Rosso lungo le sponde del fiume. Nel parco del Valentino , che si estende dalla periferia sino al centro città, lo scoiattolo Grigio è l' animale più diffuso , seguito dalla cornacchia grigia troppo grossa e intelligente per farsi predare le uova. E' molto più difficile scorgere cince pettirossi e persino i comuni passeri, sino a pochi anni fa molto numerosi. In Inghilterra , dove lo scoiattolo Grigio ha iniziato prima l' invasione, dopo anni di tentativi per tenerlo sotto controllo , sono passati a un metodo molto drastico, l' abbattimento selettivo. In molte zone rurali per proteggere lo Scoiattolo Rosso e i piccoli uccellini, pagano una sterlina per ogni capo abbattuto. Ovviamente gli animali pagano sempre per i nostri errori.
