Burano sorge su quattro isole della laguna di Venezia settentrionale. E' collegata da un ponte all'isola di Mazzorbo, che ne è diventata una sorta di appendice. Un tempo isola di “pescatori” fa che la sua caratteristica principale siano le coloratissime case. Sembra che in passato gli stessi pescatori dipingessero le proprie case con colori sgargianti per poterle riconoscere da lontano, quando tornavano in porto. Burano è famosa anche per i merletti fatti a mano. La storia del merletto della piccola isola di Burano si perde nella notte dei tempi ed è legata a congetture o leggende. Per alcuni la tipica lavorazione buranella sarebbe connessa alla tradizione marinaresca degli abitanti della piccola isola, legati alla pesca e di conseguenza alla fabbricazione e alla riparazione in loco delle reti.
