Il "Sandur" è un'impressionante area alluvionale dovuta allo scioglimento dei ghiacciai. Nella foto, lo Skeidararsandur è la distesa che va dal Vatnajökull (ghiacciaio) fino al mare, con una rete di fiumi glaciali che percorrono il terreno di sabbie nere, spesso fini, mobili e insidiose ! La foto è ripresa dall'altura che porta alla cascata Svartifoss.
