La stazione entrò in funzione nel 1886 ed era, come è tuttora, il capolinea del tronco Novara-Varallo, prestò servizio fino al 2014 quando rimase senza traffico per effetto della sospensione del servizio passeggeri sulla linea. In occasione di EXPO 2015 venne ripristinata la linea per il transito di treni storici a scopo turistico e l'idea si è dimostrata molto valida dato il buon successo che sta ottenendo. Qui il convoglio in partenza alla sera verso Milano.
