Lunedì 28 dicembre 1908 un terremoto di magnitudo Richter 7,2 e livello XI Mercalli si abbatté violentemente sullo Stretto, colpendo Messina e Reggio in tarda nottata (5:20). Uno dei più potenti sismi della storia italiana aveva quindi colto la regione nel sonno, interrotto tutte le vie di comunicazione (strade, ferrovie, tranvie, telegrafo, telefono), danneggiato i cavi elettrici e le tubazioni del gas. Con lo strascico di un maremoto, un'onda con altezza di oltre 10m e velocità di propagazione di oltre 300 km/h, l'evento devastò particolarmente Messina, causando il crollo del 90% degli edifici. In quei 37 secondi vennero dimezzate le popolazioni di Messina e Reggio, per un totale stimato di vittime superiore alle 100.000, di cui 80.000 solo nella mia città. Dell'evento Giovanni Pascoli, insegnante dell'Università degli Studi di Messina, scrisse: <<Una potenza nascosta d'onde ha annullato qui tanta storia, tanta bellezza, tanta grandezza.
