I calicanti sono arbusti di dimensioni medie, a foglie caduche, originari della Cina; in effetti il nome comune si riferisce a pianta che appartengono al genere delle calycanthacee, ma la cui specie si chiama Chimonanthus (fiore d'inverno). Produce un arbusto disordinato, con vari fusti eretti, ben ramificati, che danno origine ad una vegetazione densa ed intricata; le foglie appaiono in primavera, dopo o durante la fioritura, e sono allungate, molto simili a quelle di un pesco o di un salice, lanceolate, di colore verde medio. La caratteristica peculiare del calicanto sono sicuramente i fiori, che sbocciano in pieno inverno, indipendentemente dalle condizioni climatiche, e ben prima che la pianta abbia cominciato a produrre le foglie; il risultato è un arbusto all'apparenza secco, completamente ricoperto da fiorellini molto profumati. I fiori sbocciano dal legno vecchio, senza picciolo; sono dotati di petali allungati, cerosi, di colore bianco o giallo.
