l Pino Loricato è il simbolo del Parco Nazionale del Pollino.Il suo nome significa letteralmente "pelle bianca" per il caratteristico colore bianco argenteo che assume il tronco secco. Il nome "loricato" lo si deve alla corteccia che negli esemplari ultra centenari ricorda la corazza dei guerrieri romani (la lorica). In Europa è presente solo nei Balcani, mentre in Italia vegeta esclusivamente nell'areale del Pollino. La competizione con il faggio ha spinto il Pino Loricato a ritirarsi tra i costoni rocciosi dove cresce contorto e tormentato dai venti gelidi. Il suo seme germina molto lentamente, ma riesce a germogliare anche in un pugno di terra sedimentato nell'incavo di una roccia, poi sfida l'eternità vivendo anche fino a 1000 anni. Le condizioni ambientali, proibitive per altre piante, fanno assumere al pino le forme più strane, con i rami che si dispongono a bandiera per resistere ai forti venti. Invecchiando perde lentamente la corteccia, scoprendo il tronco bianco argenteo che la forte resinosità protegge per anni contro l'attacco di insetti.
