Il tema centrale di Gajan è quello di trarre soddisfazione attraverso il dolore, devozione e sacrificio, con la speranza di vincere il favore di Shiva, il dio indù della distruzione, il cui ruolo è quello di distruggere l'universo, al fine di ricrearlo. Il festival si osserva principalmente nello stato del Bengala Occidentale.
