Gaeta, conosciuta dai turisti e dai suoi cittadini come la “città dalle 100 chiese”conserva ancora oggi, non solo nella memoria di qualche capitello incastonato nelle mura dei palazzi, numerose chiese, viva testimonianza del suo antico splendore e del forte legame che da sempre ha avuto con la cristianità. Città prediletta dai Papi, già prima dell'anno Mille divenne sede dell'Arcidiocesi, contando un numero elevato di luoghi di culto sorti in anni differenti, dimore simboliche delle diverse epoche. In uno studio del 1885, Onorato Caetani d'Aragona, censì ben 39 chiese; nel 1970 Giovanni Alletta ne contò circa 56, considerando anche quelle sconsacrate e scomparse. Molte chiese negli anni furono distrutte, inglobate in altre strutture o hanno cambiato la destinazione d'uso ma, nonostante gli eventi bellici e guerre di domini, Gaeta conserva ancora oggi gelosamente le sue chiese che, a tutti gli effetti, fanno parte dell'invidiabile patrimonio architettonico della città.
