Il Palio di Siena non è una manifestazione riesumata ed organizzata a scopo turistico: esso fa parte integrante della storia cittadina e del popolo senese nei molteplici aspetti in cui si è diversificato durante i secoli.Le Contrade e il Palio hanno origini remote: i primi documenti che citano le Contrade risalgono al 1208 mentre solo nel 1281 si parla di "Spese per la Festa di Santa Maria d'agosto". A questa cerimonia non partecipavano le Contrade come le conosciamo oggi e i primi nomi attuali compaiono solo alla fine del Quattrocento fino ad apparire tutte nel 1546. Fin dall'antico le corse con i cavalli erano frequenti per le vie della città ma solo nel 1633 viene documentato il primo Palio corso dalle Contrade in Piazza con i cavalli. Da allora il Palio è sempre stato effettuato, salvo l'interruzione napoleonica del 1801, quelle del 1848, del 1859 e del 1866 per le Guerre d'Indipendenza, poi le interruzioni dal 1915 al 1918 per la Grande Guerra e dal 1940 al 1944 per la seconda Guerra Mondiale, infine nel 2020 e 2021 per la pandemia.
Il Palio viene corso due volte l'anno: il 2 luglio in onore della Madonna di Provenzano e il 16 agosto in onore della Madonna Assunta.
