Verona e le fortificazione Austriache. Fra il XII e il XIII secolo, dunque, al di là dell'Adige, intorno al Colle di San Pietro, si andava formando il Quartiere del Castello. Proprio intorno a questo nucleo, si allargarono le nuove fortificazioni, i cosiddetti Muri Nuovi. Le nuove fortificazioni non erano più del tipo “alla romana”, con mura quadrate, ma seguivano e assecondavano le caratteristiche naturali del terreno. Le muraglie erano del tipo “a sacco”, costituite da due pareti esterne, lontane poco più di un metro, riempite da materiale grossolano: ciottoli di fiume, frammento di mattoni e di tegole, pietrame di recupero tenuto insieme da malta morbida. I muri esterni di contenimento erano invece costruiti con blocchi di pietra di medio volume, squadrati non finemente e legati con malta dura. Le torri di difesa non sorgevano a distanze regolari ma nei luoghi strategicamente interessanti
