Beautiful macro. Hello Mauro Bellissima macro. Ciao Mauro |

You didn't need the tripod but you DID need the macro lens (at this focal length, at least too), an absolute beauty and very well worth hulking the Sigma over there for. |

Many thanks, Giuliano - super quick! Many thanks to you, too, Mauro! A really lovely comment, Tim - thanks very much! With a laptop, a hard drive, an iPad, camera, four lenses, a phone and selection of chargers, I had little else in my luggage. I got stopped for a closer look by the airport security....... I was so glad I took the macro lens this time but would really like a travel tripod for the next trip! Ann :)) |

Goodness, lady on a mission! No wonder you were stopped at the airport! As most will endorse (Juza himself used the carbon fibre version) the Manfrotto BeFree www.juzaphoto.com/recensione.php?l=en&t=manfrotto_befree is considered to be the gamechanger for travel tripods - it's far from perfect or ideal (compromises never are) but does fold up to about 1 foot in length with shoulder case to carry it in included. Another David M recommendation (he bought one specially and took on his holiday of a lifetime to NZ) it's also surprisingly well made and assembled and I got mine from Great Western Cameras in Swindon for £120, but I think they're generally a little more than that now. They also come in colours! I don't like using mine much but damn, it's useful for when you might need one and if you start/end shooting in the dark, as I often do. |

Thanks for the info, Tim! Whatever I go for, it is likely to be the carbon fibre version to keep the weight down. Preferably one where I don't need to change the quick release plate that lives on my camera for my Manfrotto tripod. Thank you so much, Fabrizio! Ann :)) |

The carbon fibre is actually very expensive (2 times more). As you can imagine that you don't get fancy quick release plates included or being accepted with this one, if you saw how small it is, you'd understand. Actually Amazon UK has the normal version for £117, CF £248) Which is your full size Manfrotto? I'm looking to get another Man carbon fibre this winter (I bought one over ten years, until one tiny part broke which is now longer available. I used my heavy 'normal' big Slik 500 with heavy duty full size 3 way head (one I bought afterwards, not the one included) in the small hours last night for night shots and that was some real weight and effort - that purchase was a "budget" interim until I could get another carbon fibre, perhaps a Man 190 CF, which actually costs less than the CF BeFree!. |

Generally, I don't like ball and socket heads, you have to release the whole system just to make very minor changes, whereas a three way pan and tilt is much more controllable and you don't have to find where the slit is to be able to go vertical format, which always winds me up as in the dark, it's never where you want it to be! But such extra control means extra cost (having three handles/knobs etc) and can double up for video work too, for panning etc. Thanks for the Castle Cam link, I was going to suggest you go to a larger camera shop, maybe even in London to check out travel tripods as you can never get an idea as to size and functionality from a website. London Camera in Southampton (main store) has a good selection too). As for the B3 (as I call it) don't forget I needed one to carry at all times, I have no boot of a car in which to store it until needed and as I said, I don't much like ball/socket heads and I never like anything that can't reach my full over six feet height either! So, you may well find one that is perhaps a bit bigger and maybe cheaper, the B3's strength is the ingenious design that allows it to fold up into almost nothing (it's so exact that trying to getting it into the bag is a challenge, unless you do it absolutely correctly). The normal version is not a featherweight but the rigidity up to just above waist height is excellent, my Phoning Home in London and Busker under Big Ben are both sharp testament to that. |
