Con la costruzione del muro nel 1961, la Bernauer Straße, che si estende tra i quartieri di Wedding e Mitte, divenne uno dei luoghi più emblematici della divisione della città. Oggi è uno dei luoghi della memoria più visitati di Berlino. La Bernauer Straße acquistò notorietà durante la Guerra Fredda, perchè quì furono costruite numerose gallerie per consentire la fuga dei tedeschi dell'est verso l'occidente. Molte foto lungo il memoriale ritraggono le ore più drammatiche della costruzione del Muro su questa strada. Nel giro di poco tempo il governo della DDR diede l'ordine di sbarrare le porte e le finestre degli edifici in prossimità del confine, molti inquilini furono trasferiti altrove e l'intera zona venne sottoposta a un regime di controllo capillare e feroce. Sulla Bernauer Straße all'angolo con la RuppinerStraße è stata scattata anche una delle più famose fotografie-icona della Guerra Fredda, quella che ritrae il sottoufficiale diciannovenne Conrad Schumann mentre, approfittando di un momento di distrazione dei sui colleghi, salta il filo spinato e fugge all'ovest. Conrad Schumann fu il primo uomo in divisa ad evadere dal suo stesso regime e quel gesto divenne simbolo di libertà. La Bernauer Straße è tristemente famosa anche per la Chiesa della Riconciliazione, un imponente edificio in mattoni in stile neogotico, che durante la divisione venne inglobato nella “striscia della morte”.
