La fortuna di essere accompagnato dai Ranger. Rara immagine di un cucciolo di leopardo (2/3 settimane) mai visto così piccolo, ben nascosto dalla madre che era a caccia. Casualmente verso sera ci siamo incontrati con i ranger che la mia guida Steven, conosceva bene, ci hanno autorizzato a seguirli lungo il letto del fiume per circa 200 metri dal guado sino a giungere alla tana. Così piccoli i cuccioli di leopardo sono molto vulnerabili e i pericoli arrivano soprattutto dai babbuini che frequentano lo stesso habitat. La tana consisteva in un piccolo anfratto ricavato dalle radici di alberi sulla sponda del fiume a circa tre metri d'altezza nascosta da vegetazione e papiri, praticamente introvabile. Curioso come tutti i cuccioli però tanto piccolo, istruito dalla madre, se ne stava rintanato muovendosi molto lentamente e ci ha messo un po' di tempo a farsi vedere; pochi secondi e si è rintanato nell'oscurità. Situazione molto pericolosa perché con la madre nei paraggi, essendo nel letto del fiume largo non più di tre metri, senza via di fuga, non avremmo avuto scampo e ci avrebbe sicuramente attaccati. I ranger hanno raccomandato a Steven, considerata la pericolosità e la delicatezza della situazione, di non diffondere la notizia in modo che il cucciolo raggiungesse in tutta sicurezza l'età di 5/6 settimane e neppure di recarci il giorno dopo alla tana. Steven è un grande, e malgrado la voglia, soprattutto mia di tornarci, non lo abbiamo fatto.
Volutamente non ho clonato nulla lasciando la scena originale con erba e foglie di papiro a nascondere il cucciolo.
