Diversamente dagli altri castelli, costruiti per scopi bellici e di protezione, il castello di Fénis non è situato sulla sommità di un promontorio, bensì su un lieve poggio privo di difese naturali. Unendo ai caratteri della fortificazione quelli della residenza signorile, il castello di Fénis fu infatti la prestigiosa sede di rappresentanza dei maggiori esponenti della famiglia Challant, che lo dotarono dell'imponente apparato difensivo, nonché di eleganti decorazioni pittoriche, simboli di potenza e di prestigio. L'architettura del castello di Fénis è il risultato di campagne costruttive succedutesi negli anni: torri e mura merlate furono aggiunte verso la metà del secolo XIV da Aimone di Challant al torrione preesistente, già dimora abituale ? un secolo prima ? del visconte Gotofredo II. Il castello di Fénis appartenne ai signori di Challant del ramo di Fénis fino al 1716, quando fu ceduto al conte Baldassarre Castellar di Saluzzo Paesana. Le vicende che segnarono la storia di quella famiglia condussero il maniero a un lento degrado, preludio dell'abbandono che lo vide trasformato in abitazione rurale: le sale del pianterreno furono adibite a stalle, mentre il primo piano fu usato come fienile. Il recupero del monumento si deve ad Alfredo d'Andrade, che acquistò il castello di Fénis nel 1895 e, dopo averne restaurato le parti più rovinate, lo donò allo Stato. Oggi l'edificio è di proprietà della Regione autonoma Valle d'Aosta, che lo ha destinato a sede del museo del mobile valdostano.
