La genziana nivale è una pianta annua a distribuzione artico-alpina presente lungo tutto l'arco alpino e sull'Appennino centro-settentrionale. Cresce in pascoli alpini e subalpini, praterie, macereti nivali. Come tutte le specie congeneri contiene glucosidi amari che aumentano la secrezione gastrica, ma è meno utilizzata di altre specie per le ridotte dimensioni della radice (essendo una pianta annua, la radice è molto sottile). Il nome generico deriva dal re illirico Genthios (ca. 500 a.C.) che secondo Plinio scoprì le proprietà medicinali delle genziane; il nome specifico si riferisce all'habitat di alta montagna. Forma biologica : terofita scaposa. Periodo di fioritura giugno-settembre. Habitat:Specie indifferente al substrato, che ama suoli poveri: pascoli alpini e subalpini, praterie, macereti nivali; 1.500÷2.800 m s.l.m.
