L'edificio possente e massiccio, posizionato nel mezzo della Valle d'Aosta sulla sommità dello strapiombo che domina la piana di Châtillon e Saint-Vincent e che non passa inosservato neanche al frettoloso utente autostradale, risale all'epoca del nobile Ebalo II di Challant, che nel 1343 fece costruire, su quell'inospitale rocca, la sua dimora severa, ma difendibile anche senza mura e con poche torri. Il castello, sfortunato testimone della breve vita della famiglia degli Challant-Ussel, fu abbandonato sul finire del Quattrocento, ma le sue mura esterne e parte dei monumentali camini e dello scalone sono rimaste in piedi in ricordo del passato. Al castello si sale non solo per la sua storia, ma anche per l'ambiente selvaggio e autentico che lo circonda. Se il suo lato a sud è inaccessibile e a picco sulla Dora Baltea, l'accesso al castello avviene dal lato nord, e in particolare dal piccolo villaggio di Ussel, raggiungibile in auto da Châtillon attraverso boschi di quercia e castagno. Lasciata l'auto, si prosegue a piedi lungo un comodo sentiero, che dapprima attraversa un vasto pianoro e poi, all'improvviso, s'inerpica per gli ultimi 50 metri fino a raggiungere il castello. Il luogo è suggestivo e interessante: le rocce che attorniano il castello sono state erose e levigate dai ghiacci che un tempo ricoprivano la valle e sono rivestite da una patina rossastra dovuta a un'alterazione del ferro contenuto in grande quantità. Si dice che al Castello di Ussel la bussola impazzisca! Passato alla famiglia dei Passerin d'Entrèves, il maniero fu acquistato nel 1984 dal Barone Marcel Bich e donato, con la clausola che fosse destinato a un uso pubblico, alla Regione autonoma Valle d'Aosta, che lo ristrutturò e lo aprì nel 1998. Marcel Bich, la cui famiglia era originaria della Valtournenche, era un famoso industriale francese con un innato fiuto per gli affari: dopo aver comprato il brevetto della penna a sfera dal suo inventore Birò, la migliorò e la diffuse in tutto il mondo con il nome di BIC. All'enorme successo della penna a sfera seguì anche quello dei prodotti “usa e getta” quali accendini e rasoi da barba. Il suo legame con la terra di origine ha permesso a noi oggi di poter apprezzare uno dei gioielli della storia millenaria della Valle d'Aosta, restituito in tutto il suo splendore. Da allora il castello è visitabile internamente solo in occasione delle esposizioni che ospita nel periodo estivo. Ma vale la pena salire fino al castello anche solo per ammirare il bellissimo panorama. La vista spazia dal Monte Rosa al ghiacciaio del Rutor. Ai piedi della rocca, dall'altro lato della Dora Baltea, il paese di Châtillon con i suoi due castelli, il castello Passerin d'Entrèves e il castello Gamba, sede della collezione d'arte moderna e contemporanea della Valle d'Aosta. Di fronte, la cittadina di Saint-Vincent con il Casinò de la Vallée le Terme, i suoi numerosi hotel e ristoranti.
