Successivamente anche i corrieri postali ricorrevano (e ricorrono) alle slitte trainate da cani per spostarsi da una parte all'altra del Grande Nord. Curiosità: Nel 1973, l'esploratore americano Joe Redington organizzò la prima gara su neve storica "Iditarod". La mitica gara, 1800 km, da Anchorage a Nome, ricorda l'impresa di un gruppo di corrieri su slitte che nel 1925 riuscì a portare il vaccino in tempo a Nome, altrimenti sterminata dalla difterite. A Balto, uno dei cani leader che hanno partecipato all'ultimo tragitto della spedizione, è stata eretta addirittura una statua al Central Park di New York (il cane che condusse il team per la maggior parte del lungo tragitto si chiamava invece Togo) . Nel 1988 nasce in Europa l'Alpirod, gara europea che si correva sulle Alpi Francesi, Italiane, Svizzere ed Austriache. #SleddogSport
