Il periodo tardo primaverile/estivo è teatro dell'inizio di uno dei cicli più affascinanti del mondo animale, la metamorfosi. Questa coinvolge prevalentemente gli insetti ma lo si può osservare anche in altri gruppi, come quello degli anfibi. In questo lungo e travagliato processo tutto inizia dalla deposizione delle uova, in questo caso di macaone (Papilio machaon), in genere fissate su specifiche famiglie di vegetali, dette piante nutrici. Queste di fatto "alleveranno" i piccoli, fornendo sia cibo che protezione, dal momento della schiusa fino a quello della formazione della crisalide. In questa foto ho ritratto il bruco nel suo momento più bello, da qui a poco formerà il suo bozzolo trasformandosi in pupa, in crisalide e successivamente sfarfallando come esemplare adulto. Questo sviluppo prevede tutta una serie di trasformazioni successive, sia dal lato morfologico che da quello fisiologico, che consumeranno una notevole quantità di energia ( per questi motivi in genere la larva prossima alla metamorfosi è molto più grossa dell'esemplare adulto). Per citare uno dei cambiamenti sostanziali, l'alimentazione del bruco è costituita da grandi quantità di vegetali che mastica con le potenti mandibole mentre, da adulto, queste verranno sostituite da una struttura detta "spirotromba" è adibita alla suzione del nettare.
