La Lycaena phlaeas ha le ali anteriori di colore arancione con margine marrone, e delle macchie brunastre. Le ali posteriori sono marroni con una ampia fascia rosso arancione. Nel maschio le ali sono appuntite all'apice,mentre nelle femmine l'apice è arrotondato. Presente su tutto il territorio nazionale,è tipicamente diurna. La Lycaena phlaeas è una farfalla di piccole dimensioni,appartenente alla famiglia delle Lycaenidae, con oltre 5.000 specie distribuite in tutte le parti del mondo,e all'ordine dei Lepidotteri,numerosissimi,si stima che siano più di 174.000 specie. Il genere Colias è composto da circa 93 specie. La classe è quella degli insetti,invertebrati muniti di esoscheletro,con il corpo diviso in tre parti,la testa,il torace e l'addome.Hanno tre paia di zampe snodate,antenne e occhi composti.
