South Wales Valleys

at 220mm, 1/1000 f/11.0, ISO 1000, hand held.

Aberbeeg, in the South Wales Valleys, May 2012. The 'mountain' top is in fact a reclaimed spoil heap from the once prevalent coal mining industry that turned these lush green hills into tight-knit communities, long terraces of mining houses, collieries and as a result, blackened by waste spoil and coal dust. This industry is now dead and communities are struggling to recover, both economically and environmentally. I have been rather selective with my telephoto lens but as you can see, there is now much beauty around. I make a day-trip to another Valley tomorrow (Treherbert in the Rhondda Fawr) and can hopefully get some similar landscapes. I won't be able to be on Juza at all then - apologies and thanks in advance.

You've photographed this beautifully, Tim! I love the way the eye is led through the image and the little pockets more intense colour!

Have a great trip!
