Chilean Blue Eagle sent on June 28, 2016 (0:06) by AnnH. 26 comments, 995 views. [retina]

at 110mm, 1/4000 f/5.6, ISO 400, hand held.

Photographed at a Birds of Prey display, up on the mountain. Yes, I realise that means he is kept in captivity but he, and other birds, do get the opportunity to fly free some of the time. The vultures and eagles soared up high and out of sight beyond the mountain! I also realise that I have clipped his wing but I am no birds in flight expert, so was quite pleased that I had managed to photograph him reasonably clearly (for me!)

Yes, good and worthy effort, especially for just 110mm worth of focal length, good clarity and colour and with enough space for him(her) to fly into. The lead on its leg would tell most that it was a captive bird, so no problems there either.

Thanks, Tim! I was hesitant to post it and it would seem that perhaps I was right to be hesitant....

It ''s just my opinion, and that is just for me. But just I do not understand where it is the satisfaction of photographing a raptor so nice being held in captivity. photograph with 110mm means it is also small the cage. boh

Many thanks to you, too, Andrea!

Enrico - At the time of taking this photo, the eagle was not in a cage but flying out in the open. I, too, would prefer to see such birds flying in complete freedom but do not places such as these have breeding and conservation programmes to nurture and protect these magnificent birds? This birds of prey centre is high up on a mountain and, as I have already said, I saw birds soar up and out of sight, so not caged / tethered all the time.

There will always be debate over creatures kept in captivity, whether birds or animals. Presumably you hold the same opinion over all animals kept in zoos, where there is also often important conservation work.

Wonderful captures Ann, just wish for wings that are out of frame, if it were slightly more inside was even more beautiful

Thanks very much, Salvo! I love birds of prey and have tried photographing them a few times before but have seldom managed anything remotely resembling a sharp shot when in flight!

Ann :))
