A causa del forte vento freddo l'ubicazione dell'ingresso era nota agli abitanti di Fornovolasco fin dal 1800. In quel periodo venne costruita una piccola capanna proprio sul piccolo "foro soffiante" per sfruttare il vento come frigorifero naturale. Dalle informazioni che si hanno pare che la prima persona ad entrare all'interno della Grotta, agli inizi del Novecento, sia stata una bambina di quattro anni conosciuta con il nomignolo di Betta che, per gioco s'insinuò in questo piccolo "foro soffiante". Il passaggio era troppo piccolo per un adulto e la bambina percorse solo 10 metri e tornata all'esterno raccontò ai giovani, che la convinsero ad entrare, che la galleria continuava. La curiosità spinse questi giovani ad allargare l'ingresso e ad esplorare i primi 30 metri. In quel punto dove finalmente il soffitto si alzava e la progressione diventava più semplice, fu la paura per l'ignoto che li spinse a tornare all'esterno. Le prime spedizioni scientifiche, condotte da speleologi, iniziarono nel 1929 con un'esplorazione del Gruppo Speleologico Fiorentino. Scoprirono i primi 60 metri di galleria, si arrestarono davanti ad un sifone, una galleria a forma di U riempita d'acqua. Loro pensarono di aver raggiunto il fondo della grotta e che terminasse con un lago. Solo nel 1961 gli speleologi del Gruppo Speleologico Bolognese arrivando in un periodo di forte siccità riuscirono superare il sifone e a esplorare i primi 600 metri di gallerie. Da allora si sono susseguite varie esplorazioni che hanno portato lo sviluppo complessivo a circa 4500 metri. #grotte
